Here it is...a confession.  I love the holidays.  And I love holiday stories.  So many of my books, whether they're comedies or dramas, center around family themes, and the holidays are perfect for those.  If you're looking for a holiday read, I've got new releases and older books that are still readily available as eBooks.

Hi, everyone!  And welcome to all the new people who've joined my mailinglist over the last couple months!

Quincy’s third story, Spruced Up, is out! It’s a novella, so it’s shorter than normal, and since it's a Christmas mystery, there are no dead bodies, or even anything as big as a stolen/forged painting.  I hope you enjoy going home for Christmas with Quincy…there’s a bit of a surprise at the end.  

I’ve started working on her fourth book, Swept Up.  The opening line?  “Oh, no.  Not again.”  Don’t you want to know what’s happening…again??

My second Maid in LA book, Dusted: A Maid in LA Mystery, came out last week!!  Yeah, I'm a bit excited about it!!  To celebrate it's release, the first book in the series, Steamed, is free on Friday and Saturday.  If you haven't picked it up, I hope you join Quincy on her first adventure, and after you've read that, I hope you pick up her second.

And I might as well say, I hope you're anxious for her third story, Spruced Up.  It will be out in November.

So who is Quincy Mac?  She's a mom of three teen boys.  She owns a successful cleaning service, Mac'Cleaners.  She's a sister and daughter.  She's a good friend. She went to LA hoping to become a star.  Though that didn't happen, she's built a good life.

Then she accidentally cleans a murder scene in Steamed.  And her career as her amateur sleuth begins.  Not only does she solve that mystery, she finds a new boyfriend.

In her second book, Dusted, she's trying to save her business when they find that three clients have had artwork stolen and replaced with forgeries.

And in the Christmas novella, Spruced Up, Quincy's heading home for the holidays...back to Erie, PA. Yes, you all know I'm from Erie and it had to find it's way into the story somehow!

An Interview with Holly Jacobs

Quincy Mac, A Maid in LA, budding writer and amateur sleuth interviews her author, Holly Jacobs

QM: Hi, Holly.  You know that having a fictional character interview you is... Well, it's a little nuts.  And take it from me, I know nuts.  I've been watching my business partner, Tiny, go a bit more insane every day as she gets ready for her wedding.

HJ: I have four kids…they assure me on a regular basis that I’m a bit…uh, unique in my thought processes.  Anyway, thanks for taking time away from your busy writing and cleaning schedule to help me out with this rather unique interview, Quincy.

QM: Us writers have to stick together, though I feel a bit full-of-myself referring to myself as a writer.

HJ: So do I most days. Sometimes I pinch myself. It’s such a dream to spend my days telling stories I love, and creating characters I love—you’re one of those.

QM: Well, thank you! I guess my first question would have to be, after writing so many romances, why try your hand at mysteries?

HJ: Well, you do have a bit of romance in your books.

QM: (Blushing slightly) Yes, I do…thanks for that.

HJ: You’re welcome.  And I started out writing comedic romances for Harlequin Duets.  Even now that I tell far more emotional books, I think my humor comes through.  So telling a funny story about a maid who accidentally cleans a murder scene wasn’t much of a stretch.

 

QM: Speaking of stretching…did you have to give me three boys and the stretch-marks to show for it?  Not to mention the baby-pooch.

HJ: Hey, I just write it as I see it.  And I prefer writing real women—

QM: Real fictional women?  That does seem like a bit of an oxymoron, doesn’t it?

 

HJ: Hey, I’m a rebel.  But seriously, when I hear from a reader who tells me that a character felt so real they felt like she was an old friend…Well, that’s a big compliment.  Probably the biggest compliment a reader can give me.  Look at it this way, you’re like the Velveteen Rabbit.  More real because of your baby-pooch and stretch-marks.

QM: Let’s just say we can agree to disagree on the baby-pooch.  And onto my next question…Why a maid?

HJ: I really enjoy having characters who work at real jobs.  A barista.  A farmer.  A librarian.  I’ve written cops, nurses, store owners and stay-at-home-moms.  Again, it has a lot to do with that realness we were just talking about.  I know a lot of nurses and cops…but very few billionaires. 

QM: Most of your books are set in your hometown, Erie, PA.  Why set my story in LA?

HJ: Well, you are from Erie, and you’re going home in your Christmas novella, Spruced Up, so I do have that local connection I love to do.  But given the circumstances of Mr. Banning’s death, you sort of had to be based in LA.  I mean, I think Erie has just about everything, but I don’t think we have any Mortie winning writers here.  And in Dusted, having those Lifestyles-of-the-Rich-and-Famous clients using your cleaning services…well, that worked well in LA, too.

QM: This isn’t really part of the interview, but just something I’ve wanted to say, thanks for writing me as a strong female character who doesn’t wait to be saved, but rather saves herself.

HJ: I know you have three sons, Quince, but I have one son and three daughters.  I like to write strong female characters for my girls. Capable women who can kick butt and save themselves if they need to, but can also open themselves up to someone else.  I think the best relationships have partners who take turns being the saver and the savee.

QM: So in Steamed, I solved a murder.  In Dusted, I figured out who stole a bunch of artwork and replaced it with forgeries.  In those two books, I’ve made friends, dealt with family and helped Tiny get through a wedding.  What’s next?

HJ: Well, as I mentioned, in November’s novella, Spruced Up, you’re heading home to Erie for Christmas.  And your mom and dad’s medical practice has a bunch of supplies that have gone missing.  You’re going to figure out who’s taking them and why.  And there might be a special holiday moment.

QM: No murders or whack-a-doodles with guns in this one?

HJ: None.  That doesn’t mean you’re not going to have your work cut out for you.

QM: Well, anytime I go home, it’s work.  It’s hard to be the family black sheep.  I mean, everyone’s a doctor.  Everyone. Except me.

HJ: And your uncle.

QM: Yeah. Although things have been a bit better with my mom since her last visit to LA.  Maybe this trip will be different. 

HJ: Maybe. But I’m not saying.

QM: If it’s not, I’ll know who to blame.

HJ: Hey, I just write it as I see it. 

QM: Well, thanks for letting me do the interview.  I still think people are going to think you’re nuts.

HJ: Hey, I’m the one that delivers them Monday Glee on a regular basis.  I like Mondays.  If that wasn’t their first clue that I might be a bit different, then maybe…

QM: Maybe they need to read a few more mysteries so they can pick up on the clues better!

HJ: That was blatant, Quincy.

QM: My author didn’t write me as subtle.

HJ: Okay, I guess it’s my turn to say, I hope you’ll check out Quincy’s first two books:

Friends' Friday #8

I always love hearing from Liz Flaherty...and love reading her books, too!












Heather McAllister always has the most beautiful jewelry, but she has one spider broach that I truly adore!  That pin doesn't make me like spiders in my house any more...I still scream like a girl when I see one, but when I finish screaming, I always think of Heather in the nicest way!  LOL









Nancy Warren is my conference roommate.  We leave on opposite coasts, in different countries, but whenever we get together it's like we live next door and chat every day.  She's a wonderful friend...I wish she did live next door!











I met Virginia Kantra at one of the first conferences I went to...and I always look for her when I go to one now.  I think that's my favorite part of conferences turning a corner and finding a friend!











I met Amanda Baker Usen when I was speaking in Buffalo at a  Western New York RWA meeting.  She was talking about selling Scrumptious! I'm so excited that it's finally out!

Speaking of new books, I mentioned it on my social media, but in case you missed it, I've sold two more books to Montlake Books.  One Thing will be out in April...it's a book of my heart.  And next Christmas, there's a new book that set in a new town...and Nana Vancy will be visiting for all you Nana Vancy fans!

And last bit of news...there's a new Quincy book out in just a couple weeks!  You can check out an excerpt at my website!

Friends' Friday #6

Sorry I missed last week's Friends' Friday! We were in Blue Mountain, Ontario. I climbed the mountain...and survived.  It was a near thing! LOL  I got home and went to work cleaning up the sequel to Steamed: A Maid in LA Mystery, Dusted (I'm posting the cover here...I'm so jazzed with it!). Yes, Quincy Mac is back with another investigation and I'm having so much fun with this second book!  Thanks to everyone who's picked up a copy of Steamed and sent me a note, or posted a review!

When I get together with Shirley Jump, there's always a lot of laughter.  She's a sweet lady and her books reflect that!












I had a chance to work with Winnie Griggs on a writing group's board. I'm not sure how she juggled work, her writing and the board's work, but she did it brilliantly.  She's such a talented, hardworking lady!








Talking about Judith Arnold is fun because her books rock, but talking to her is even more fun! And reading her books?? The most fun of all!









Jeannie Watt doesn't just write about cowboys and ranches, she lives in a Nevada ranching community.  She's definitely takes the writing advice, 'write what you know' to heart!








I wrote two Duets with Bonnie Tucker. Our stories were separate, but tied.  I can't tell you how much fun it was to work with a friend. I met Bonnie at my first writing conference and we've been friends ever since!

Anna Destefano is a beautiful lady, inside and out!  She's been a friend for years...one of those friends I only get to see at conferences, but whenever we get together, it's like no time's passed since we last met!










Ruth Logan Hearn lives close enough that we've met in between us both in Buffalo.  If you're an aspiring romance writer in that area, check out WNRWA...they were sweet enough to have us down to talk.  We had so much fun!









Lori Wilde is part of that group of friends I met when I started writing for Duets.  She's a not only sweet, but one of the hardest working ladies I know!








             

I met Kim Van Meter because we both write for SuperRomance.  She is a lovely lady, and a true renaissance woman...she's designed my covers for my Maid in LA Mystery series!









 Carolyn Brown and I met because we were both writing for Avalon.  She is a sweet lady in every sense of the word.  I'm so lucky to have so many wonderful friends.  I just wish they lived closer!

I won't be posting a Friends' Friday next week, but I'll be back the week after!  We're thick in the middle of kitchen renovation here!  I'll be posting pictures on Facebook and Google+ if you want to see!

Friends' Friday #4

I'm glad you all are enjoying these posts!  For those who've missed the first three, they're here: One, Two and Three.  To recap, I put friends' names in a hat, and picked out groups of five.  So here's your fourth batch (wow, a month already).  Some I'm sure you've read, and maybe a few are new-to-you!  That's good...I love introducing my friends around!





Colleen Collins is a woman of many talents.  Not only is she a heck of a writer, she's a detective.  If you read my new book, Steamed: A Maid in LA Mystery, you saw Colleen's name.  Quincy's new teacher, Dick Macy used Colleen's (and Shaun Kaufman's) book, How to Write a Dick as his text.  They even gave him a quote!












I love talking to Cindi Myers about her projects.  She loves dogs and skiing, and when she built a house, I had so much fun following its progress.  Yeah, you all know I'm a renovation addict...so it was my kind of fun!








Gwyneth Atlee/Colleen Thompson.  You noted the two names.  Yeah, Colleen is one of my dual personality friends! But no matter what name she's using, she's a sweet lady and a heck of a writer!  I think of her whenever I have a margarita!







Now, if you've been following my Friends' Fridays, you met Kate Walker in week two.  Here's something you might not know. Kate, my friend, Donna Alward are my twins.  Three twins.  Three twins who are different ages and from different countries (I'm US, Donna's Canadian and Kate's English).  We spent a conference a few years ago trying to explain our three twinned-ness to other people.  Here's the thing, it doesn't matter they all gave us the you're-crazy looks.  We're writers, so we've all got that look before.  But when you find people who are kindred spirits, you claim them.  Donna is definitely that!





Jade Lee/Katherine Greyle is another dual personality friends. And she's also one of those friends who I know, within minutes of meeting up, will have me cracking up!  She also introduced me to Jim Butcher's books.  I think of her every time I read one of his Harry Dresden books (I should mention, I think of her whenever I read her books, too! LOL)  That's the mark of a good friend...they can figure out what you'll like and point you in the right direction.

Friends' Friday #3

Wow, we've hit week three of my Friends' Fridays.  I hope you're enjoying them.  In case you're new to Friends' Friday, I put a bunch of friends' names in a hat, and picked out groups of five.  So here's your third batch.  Here are links in case you missed week one and two.  I hope you find some new-to-you writers!






I met Isabel Sharpe when I sold to Harlequin Duets.  She sent me a lovely note and has been a friend ever since!  She's got a huge heart...it's no wonder she writes romance!  Whenever I'm looking for foodie info, she's my go-to resource.  I'm a good basic cook, but she's simply amazing!












Samantha Hunter has been an online friend for a while now.  She hangs out in Harlequin's online community and we got to know each other there, but soon became even better friends.  We've hung out in person at a conference, and once when Susan Gable (another Erie writer) and I roadtripped to Syracuse to speak.  The three of us went out to lunch together and my memory of the day is...laughter.  Lots of laughter.  I love talking gardening and renovation with Sam! And one day soon, she's coming to Erie to do some antiquing with me!








I know I've been talking about fiction books here, and Susan Gable writes fabulous, heartrending romance, but she's got a new book out for writers.  It's definitely a must-have for your library.  I met Susan shortly after I sold to Harlequin.  You see, I decided to go to RWA's conference and hitched a ride with Susan to Washington DC.  That one roadtrip solidified our friendship.  We've taken a bunch of trips since and roomed together a lot...she's a wonderful friend!

Catherine Mann decided there's a chance her husband and I are psychic siblings. She seems to feel
when we're together we get in trouble.  I have no idea where she gets that idea???!!!  You all know me, I never get into mischief!  Here's the thing, I would love if I really were related to the Mann Clan...they are one of the sweetest families around.  I'm so glad I get to be a shirttail psychic relative.









When I pulled Charlotte Carter's name from the hat, I had tears in my eyes.  Char passed away recently and the romance community joined with her friends and family in mourning her loss.  Char was a woman who loved her family...and that love showed through in everything she did.  She wrote wonderful stories.  Hey, she even did stand-up.  She was...well, she was simply amazing.  And I'm so honored that she was a friend.  She has a book out now.  I hope you check it out.

Friends' Friday #2

All my friends know about my Monday Glee, so I thought I'd round out the week by talking about friends' books.  Now, I have a lot of friends, and they write a lot of books, so I can fill up a few Fridays here.  I put everyone's names in a hat, and picked out groups of five.  So here's your second batch.  Some I'm sure you've already read, and maybe a few are new-to-you!  That's good...I love introducing my friends to each other!  Plus, it's beach season and everyone needs a good beach read!  This week's draws range from steamy to sweet!  There's something for everyone!





Pam Hanson and I became friends because...she liked my singing.  Of course, she only heard me singing through a wall at a hotel.  It's good to note that my singing is so much better when heard through a wall!  That friendship was cemented when Harlequin asked us to work on the 100th Duet together.  We had so much fun with it!

Dee J. Adams has been a friend for a long time.  I was there cheering when she sold her first book.  I'll confess, having a friend who lives in L.A. was such a help when I started writing Steamed.  I bugged her with all kinds of questions.  And like I said in the book...any inaccuracies are my fault, not hers!













I was a fan of JoAnn Ross, for years and I was lucky when I first started writing that she supported me and my writing in so many ways!  A few years ago, I got to hang with her in Port Clinton, Ohio.  That's one of the problems with having writing friends that live all over...you don't get to see them half enough in person!  But thank goodness for the internet.  The world's become so much smaller!






Cheryl St. John is another one of those very generous writer friends who took a brand new writer under her wing.  I can't tell you how much that support meant to me, and I learned so much from her.  For years we were online friends, but when I finally met her at a conference, it was like we'd always known each other in person.  She's a great lady!







Kate Walker is my "lovely" friend.  So is her husband.  Oh, many of her readers know him as The Babe Magnet, but to me, he's simply my lovely friend.  The theme of this week's picks seems to be friends I don't get to see half enough in person.  Well, Kate is definitely one of those.  She lives in England.  There's a nice model castle on my office shelf that she gave me.  It's near her home. We have a date to go visit it in person sometime soon!

Well, we have Monday Glee, so I thought I'd round out the week by talking about my friends' books—Friends' Friday.  Now, I have a lot of friends, and they write a lot of books, so I can fill up a few Fridays here.  I put everyone's names in a hat, and picked out groups of five, so it's a random list.  Now, without delay, here's your first batch.  Some I'm sure you've read, and maybe a few are new-to-you!  That's good...I love introducing my friends around!

Darlene Gardner is a SuperAuthor, and she's also the author of a new YA series.  I've read the first one and I'm chomping at the bit to read the rest!













Jenn McKinlay wrote with me at Duets, and she's now a NY Times bestselling mystery author.  Uh,
but be careful reading her stuff...her cupcake series had my stomach growling even as I tried to figure out whodunnit!  I can't wait to start her new series!








Regan Black has been a friend for years.  It all started at a conference where we kept bumping into
each other.  We teased each other about stalking, but in truth what started there was a friendship.










Joanne Rock doesn't write just romance anymore...she's writing YA with Karen Rock as JK Rock.  Definitely one to check out!  I met Joanne at a conference and she's been a friend every since!









Now, people tell me I'm prolific, but next to my friend, Delores Fossen, I feel like a slacker.  She started writing comedy with me at Harlequin, and now she writes for Intrigue.


I hope you enjoy this new feature.  It's going to be a fairly regular one...I have a lot of friends who happen to be fantastic writers!

How people talking in your head can sometimes be a good thing!

Steamed: A Maid in LA  Mystery

Every now and again, a character is born and it doesn't matter if you have time to write their story.  It doesn't matter if you have a publisher in mind.  It simply doesn't matter.  That character pesters you and nudges you until you finally give in and write their story.

Quincy Mac was that kind of character for me.

I tried to explain that I had contracts and due dates—she didn't care.  I tried to explain that I write romance—she said, "Okay, so give me a romance."  I tried to explain that I don't know anything about the mystery genre—she said, "So just write my story. Don't worry about the genre "rules," just write my story."

So, I did.

Steamed isn't really a romance.  It isn't really a mystery.  It's Quincy's story.  Who is Quincy?  She's a mother first and foremost.  She came to LA from Erie, PA (where else? LOL) with dreams of fortune and fame.  Instead she got married and had three sons, all one year apart.  Then she got divorced and she started a cleaning service with her best friend, Tiny.  Yes, being a maid might not be as glamorous as an award winning actress, but Quincy's built a wonderful life.  

Until... (Come on, you know there had to be an until!)
 the day she accidentally cleans a murder scene and a particularly hunky cop questions her.  Now, most people, even if they accidentally cleaned not only the murder scene, but the murder weapon, would sit back and let the cops figure out who the real murderer is.  But not Quincy. You see, she has an uncle who was wrongly accused of a crime and he spent two years in jail before the cops figured out he was innocent.

Quincy can't go to jail.  She has three boys to raise. She's going to be maid-of-honor in her best friend's wedding. And she's absolutely sure she's not someone who's meant to have a tattoo.  

So, she's on the scene.
