A book...

Some of you know that I collect antiques.  I love going to antique stores and house sales, looking for some neglected treasure. I found a cranberry harvester at one.  (Erie's Presque Isle used to have cranberry bogs...I wish it still did!)  But speaking of harvesters, I went to a house sale recently and found a copy of Gene Stratton-Porter's The Harvester.  (Notice how nicely I segued there...LOL)  I'm a huge fan and loved A Girl of the Limberlost.  I'd never read this one, so I picked it up and when I got home...this is what I found.  I was crushed.
I spent a few days talking about it on Facebook and everyone started guessing what might have been in the cut out.  And as they talked, I started to have an idea.  And a short story was born.

Writers find their inspiration everywhere.  Even in a sad book that someone cut up.  I gave the story to my newsletter subscribers early (I have other special gifts for them this year...you can join here) when I announced my newest release, Not Precisely Pregnant (and the heroine is definitely not precisely pregnant...don't you wonder how that happened?  Check it out here) and have put The Book up for Kindle, Kobo and Nook.  I hope you'll check it out!

Same Time Next Summer

Three weeks and counting until Same Time Next Summer hits the shelves.  I'll confess, I love cloudy days.  This seemed like the perfect opening to a story...

by Holly Jacobs

“CARO. CARO, COME ON.”

Twelve-year-old Carolyn Kendal threw open the cottage door and ran out onto the porch. The force of the wind took her breath away.
She looked out at Lake Erie. The wind had whipped it into a frenzy, pounding wave after wave onto the shore.
Stephan Foster, her best friend each summer, was on his family’s porch, waving at her.
Caro tugged at the leg of her swimsuit. The suit didn’t fit as well as it had when she’d arrived with her mom and dad at their Heritage Bay, Ohio, summer-home last month. She smiled as she continued pulling it into place. Normally, she didn’t like things to change but she was pleased that she’d finally started growing. For two years she’d been lamenting her lack of height, certain she’d never get any taller than four feet eleven.
She glanced down at her chest and hoped that if she was growing taller, she’d also start growing out, but truly, she didn’t feel very optimistic.
Optimistic was her word of the week. She liked the way it felt as it rolled off her tongue.
Optimistic.
It seemed like such a happy word. And on days like this, when the beach was this perfect, it was the right word to describe herself. She was optimistic.
“Caro.” Stephan’s voice was laced with exasperation. “Come on. We haven’t had a day like this all summer.”
He was now down on the beach, waiting for her.
“Caro,” he called again, louder, more impatient.
And though she knew they were getting too old for this game, there was a comfort in it. She might be starting seventh grade in September, but this was familiar and hadn’t changed. She stopped pulling at her yellow suit, quit playing with words and ran to him. Her bare feet made a slapping noise on the cement walkway then quieted as soon as she reached the rocky sand.
“Here comes one.” Stephan stood poised, ready to run.
Caro got ready, too. She extended her right leg, bending at the knee, waiting for just the right moment. She knew from years of experience, it was all about the right moment. Too soon, too late...either would ruin the run.
“Go.” Stephan sprinted forward and she followed on his heels.
The wind whipped the marshmallow-puffy clouds across the sky. Pushing. Pushing. The clouds bumped into the sun high over head. That was the moment that signaled they could start
They ran between the rocky cliff and Lake Erie, on the small swatch of pebbly sand, chasing the edge of the sun’s shadow.
Sometimes, if the breeze was lazy enough, they would catch it. But on days like today, when the wind really kicked up, they never did. But it didn’t matter. The joy was in the chase.
“We lost it.” Caro stopped, panting for air.
“There will be another shadow in a few minutes.” Stephan, a year older than she was, had the weight of that extra twelve-month’s wisdom. This time he nodded sagely, his summer-long hair flopping onto his forehead, and added, “Yep, everything always changes. We just have to wait, catch our breath, ’cause there’s always another shadow.”

Everything always changes. There’s always another shadow, she thought.
Coming July 26, Preorder at Amazon.

A Day Late and a Bride Short!!

I am so utterly excited that A Day Late and a Bride Short is finally available for your Kindle!!  This was the second book I wrote for Silhouette Romance.   I'm using "Holly Jacobs'Classic" just to let you know this is one of my earliest stories. Thank you everyone who's asked to have it available for their devices.

Thirteen years ago, when I sent this proposal to my editor, she sent me back a note from the Senior Editor saying that with that title, she'd expected a marriage of convenience story.  My original idea wasn't that at all, but as a very newish author,I said, "That's exactly what it will be."  My editor bought the proposal.

It wasn't quite the story I intended to tell and to be honest, I wasn't sure how to write a contemporary marriage of convenience.  As someone who's been married for many years--someone who is still wildly in love with her husband--I have to confess, marriage isn't always convenient!

Sarah and Donovan's story is available for preorder now!! Thanks so much and happy reading!

Reviews:

"... a beautiful, and sweet, love story. ...I can highly recommend this one it will stay with you long after you close the back cover." ~Romantic Times Bookclub, 4 1/2 Stars, TOP PICK!!

"My favorite Holly Jacobs book yet! What starts out as an engagement of convenience turns into a charming and delightful love story. Elias Donovan and Sarah Madison seems like extreme opposites until core values and heart's desires are revealed in this tale of awakening love. Ms. Jacob allows her energetic writing and talent for pairing entertaining characters to shine in A DAY LATE AND A BRIDE SHORT." ~Cheryl St.John, Author of MARRY ME…AGAIN, SSE, 8/03

"Ms. Jacobs has done it again! She has penned a delightful tale, full of her trademark humor and pure, sweet emotion. She has taken what could be a tired storyline – a marriage of convenience – and worked her own brand of magic on it, making it different and new. Of course, as said before, humor abounds, and there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to be found." (4 1/2 stars) ~Kelley Hartsell, Love Romances

"...you will love this one." ~Helen Slifer, Writers Unlimited Reviewer  "A Day Late and a Bride Short is sure to put a smile on your face..." ~Sharon Wren, Women on Writing Reviews

Pearly Gates

Pearly Gates has been readers' favorite since her first book. I'm so thrilled she's getting another chance to shine in March when A Day Late and a Bride Short is finally available as an eBook. Here's one of Pearly's famous stories...

“Well, I was right about that. Like I said, turnips were more interesting. But somehow, years ago, she managed to capture a beau. His name was Trubald.”

“Trubald?” Sarah repeated.

Pearly bristled. “It’s a good name. His granddad Trubald was a soldier and that’s who he was named after. Anyway, he lost his leg.”

“Trubald’s grandfather lost his leg in a war?” Sarah asked.

“No, Trubald.”

“Oh, how tragic. That must have been hard for him to deal with. How did it happen?”

Pearly skooched half a cushion closer, and her voice lowered, as if she were telling some State secret. “Well, the way it was told to me was, he was out drinking one night, and just lost it. No one ever quite figured out how you just lose a leg, but somehow Trubald did it, and no one ever saw hide nor hair of it again.”

“He’s lucky he didn’t bleed to death,” Sarah said, trying to imagine being so drunk you could lose a leg and not know how.

“Now, why on earth would losing a prosthetic limb make you bleed to death?” Pearly lightly tapped Sarah’s forehead. “Keep up, girl. He’d had that peg leg since he was seventeen and lost his real leg in a fluke racin’ accident.”

Sarah wasn’t going to ask what a fluke racing accident was. She just wanted to get out of here, so she wasn’t going to ask.

She wasn’t.

But Pearly just sat there, obviously waiting for her to ask, and despite her best intentions she couldn’t disappoint Pearly. So she asked, “Fluke racing accident?”

Pearly beamed. “Yep. Trubald, he was racin’ his brother Truck—who, before you ask, was really named Truman, but seeing as he looked more like a truck than a Truman, well, Truck was the name he went by. And he was racin’ Trubald that day when Trubald lost his leg. Only it wasn’t a fair race. Truck was in an auto and Trubald wasn’t. Trubald, he slipped and Truck ran over his leg. So Trubald got that fake one, and years later got drunk one night and lost it.”

Pearly paused and sucked in a quick breath. Sarah was waiting for it, ready to jump and try to get out of this story, but years of telling long-winded stories had made Pearly an expert on breathing without giving up the floor. Before Sarah could get a word in edgewise, Pearly was back at it.

“Well, my cousin Lerlene said she wasn’t marrying no man who drank so much he lost a leg, and she broke off their engagement. A couple years later, Trubald, he laid off the drink, got a new leg and a new fiancée and Lerlene’s one chance at love limped off to a marriage that’s still strong today.”

Teaser Tuesday: Just One Thing

Thanks everyone for the congrats about Just One Thing's new Reviewers' Choice Award and for it having one of the top highlight quotes on Kindle! I thought I'd use it for  #TeaserTuesday. This short scene seems just about right given the weather!  Okay, so most of us are no longer anticipating snow...we're buried in it!  LOL

I walked home that night and it felt like it could snow at any moment. There’s a certain crispness that hits right before the snow. The ground felt crunchier under my feet and there wasn’t a cloud overhead, just a black, black night sky filled with stars and a half-moon.
I could see my breath in the moonlight and I was thankful I’d worn my heavy wool socks. I’d have to pull out my boots soon, not just because of the potential snow, but simply for the warmth.
I watched my breath come out in vivid puffs and felt a sense of anticipation.
PS Just One Thing was released in German this month!

Spruced Up: A Maid in LA Holiday Novella

Thanks to everyone who's picked up the first two books in my Maid in LA series, Steamed and Dusted!  Quincy Mac is a character who I dreamed up years ago.  I loved the idea of a normal woman thrown into extraordinary circumstances.  In Steamed she accidentally cleans (and steams) a murder scene, and in Dusted, her business is at risk because an employee (Theresa, the worst employee ever!) has dusted an expensive work of art and broke it.

But neither of those mysteries has prepared Quincy for her Christmas mystery, Spruced Up…she's going home to Erie, PA for Christmas!

Spruced Up is on sale at Amazon this week!

Now, this is not a huge mystery…maybe that's not the best thing for a writer to admit, especially a mystery writer! LOL But it does move Quincy's character forward, and I think it's a heartwarming holiday story.  I wanted to be sure that Quincy doesn't become one of those amateur sleuths who falls into giant mystery after giant mystery.  I also didn't want her tripping over dead bodies in every book—I think that if you're finding a dead body around every corner, your party invitations might fall off quickly!  With Quincy, I wanted to portray a real woman.  She's got teen sons, so there's rarely any food in her refrigerator.  She comes from a family of physicians and has always felt as if she was a slight disappointment to them. She frets and worries and is a mom, a friend and a daughter. She worries about her 'baby-pooch' and about her romance.  She frets about her friends and her family.  She excited about going home for Christmas and seeing family and old friends!

I hope you enjoy Quincy's homecoming and holiday!

PS A Valley Ridge Christmas is out this month, too!  I guess I'm in a Christmas state of mind!

Holly Jacobs' November Newsletter

Hi, everyone!  And welcome to all the new people who've joined my mailinglist over the last couple months!

Quincy’s third story, Spruced Up, is out! It’s a novella, so it’s shorter than normal, and since it's a Christmas mystery, there are no dead bodies, or even anything as big as a stolen/forged painting.  I hope you enjoy going home for Christmas with Quincy…there’s a bit of a surprise at the end.
I’ve started working on her fourth book, Swept Up.  The opening line?  “Oh, no.  Not again.”  Don’t you want to know what’s happening…again??

ON SALE: Amazon has the first two books on sale this week. Book #1 Steamed, Book #2 Dusted.
I’ve heard from a lot of readers that they want my eBook-only stories available for Nook, too.  And like I keep promising, they’ll all make it there eventually.  I’m starting with the Nothing But… series of short stories.  I hope you enjoy these short stories!
Nothing But Love and Nothing But Heart are out now for both Nook and Kindle.  Watch for Nothing But Luck for Nook soon!
And heads up: Next month is the final book in my Harlequin SuperRomance Valley Ridge series, A Valley Ridge Christmas.  It’s coming out in the US, in Australia and as an e-Book only release in the UK.  And Harlequin is re-releasing an anthology I was part of, Dashing Through the Mall, at WalMart.  If you didn’t catch it the first time around, I hope you’ll check it out.
Wishing all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you all count your blessing, and as you do, you realize how much you have to give thanks for!  I know how very lucky I am…and having so many of you following my work from mysteries, to romance, from comedy to drama, well, know I give thanks for you all on a regular basis!

How people talking in your head can sometimes be a good thing!

Steamed: A Maid in LA  Mystery

Every now and again, a character is born and it doesn't matter if you have time to write their story.  It doesn't matter if you have a publisher in mind.  It simply doesn't matter.  That character pesters you and nudges you until you finally give in and write their story.

Quincy Mac was that kind of character for me.

I tried to explain that I had contracts and due dates—she didn't care.  I tried to explain that I write romance—she said, "Okay, so give me a romance."  I tried to explain that I don't know anything about the mystery genre—she said, "So just write my story. Don't worry about the genre "rules," just write my story."

So, I did.

Steamed isn't really a romance.  It isn't really a mystery.  It's Quincy's story.  Who is Quincy?  She's a mother first and foremost.  She came to LA from Erie, PA (where else? LOL) with dreams of fortune and fame.  Instead she got married and had three sons, all one year apart.  Then she got divorced and she started a cleaning service with her best friend, Tiny.  Yes, being a maid might not be as glamorous as an award winning actress, but Quincy's built a wonderful life.

Until... (Come on, you know there had to be an until!)
the day she accidentally cleans a murder scene and a particularly hunky cop questions her.  Now, most people, even if they accidentally cleaned not only the murder scene, but the murder weapon, would sit back and let the cops figure out who the real murderer is.  But not Quincy. You see, she has an uncle who was wrongly accused of a crime and he spent two years in jail before the cops figured out he was innocent.

Quincy can't go to jail.  She has three boys to raise. She's going to be maid-of-honor in her best friend's wedding. And she's absolutely sure she's not someone who's meant to have a tattoo.

So, she's on the scene.

I wrote her story on weekends around other contract and I'm thrilled to finally send her out in the world.  I hope you'll check out her story!  It's available on Amazon right now, and will hopefully be out sometime soon on other eBook platforms!

Valentine Gifts!

I couldn't find a way to send you all flowers...or even chocolate, but I wanted to do something to wish you all a Happy Valentine's. I'm so lucky to have such great friends and readers.  So, on Monday and Tuesday, Nothing But Love (a Kindle short story) is free again, and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Nothing But Heart (also a Kindle short story) is free.

It was so much fun to try to combine my Everything But... series and my WLVH Radio series in this short story trilogy.  I got my start writing short stories and it's been a number of years since I've written one.  It was fun to go back to it.  It's really a very different way to tell a story.  Especially a romance.  In just a few thousand words, I can't give you a believable Happily Ever After, but I try to leave you with a potential HEA.

So Happy Valentine's!

Holly

PS And keep an eye out in March...the last book in the Nothing But... Trilogy, Nothing But Luck, will be out in time for St. Patrick's Day!

PPS The free stories are available at Amazon stores in other countries—Canada, UK, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Brazil...
