Quiet

Quiet.

There are different types of quiet.

There’s the quiet all mothers know…the kind that tells you the kids are up to something.

There’s also the quiet in town. I don’t always notice it, but even at its most quiet, the city has noise. Cars on the road. Music. Trains. Sirens. A dog barking. Something. There’s always something. I tune it out most of the time, but it's always there.

I notice the lack out here in the country. It's a quiet that is deeper and softer. Oh, there are still background noises. Birds—specifically my Cooper’s Hawks. The rustle of leaves as the neighborhood squirrels run through the woods. The neighbor-down-the-road’s dog. And occasionally, a car. We’re set back quite a way from the road, but I still can hear a car now and then.

That country quiet is balm. It soothes me.

I came out this morning and started the fire. While the cottage warmed up, I split more kindling for my next visit and brought in more wood. Then I took a long walk down our dirt road. I normally walk through my woods, but during hunting season I take walks through my “neighborhood.” You get a different feeling walking down the road than driving down it.  Someone threw an empty can out. I grumbled as I picked it up. But then I got back to enjoying the scenery. Up the road a bit, there were a bunch of deer tracks. They obviously went from the woods across the road to my woods. I heard my hawks from the treetops. I wondered if they’re staying the winter or migrating farther south. Now that it's fall, the quiet is...quieter. The frogs aren't making any noise down at the pond. It feels as if a lot of the birds and animals have started to huddle down as the weather cools.

When I went back to the cottage, I got to work in front of the woodstove and the only sound I heard was the occasional pop of the wood. It was a lovely day.

I shot a quick tour of the downstairs for you. The stonewall if finished. Every stone came from our property. I love that. Just like all the tongue-and-groove on the wall came from the mill down the road. We're taking buying local seriously. LOL

Hope you find a moment of quiet soon!

PS I started that new bio of Louise Dickinson Rich today. I was happy to have my "lunch buddy" back.

Fictional Friends

I took Louise Dickinson Rich's We Took to the Woods out to The Cottage and read it one chapter at a time. It was my break book. Her essays weren't really chronological so I could pick it up and put it down at will...then pick it back up again.

I started to feel as if I was sharing my breaks with Louise. She lived in the backwoods of Maine with her family and a lovely cast of characters as neighbors. These were country "neighbors" which means they weren't city-close. I loved that she loved the quiet in the woods as much as I do. I got her.  She felt like a friend.

She's not my first fictional friend.  I've had so many. I never understood how anyone could be lonely or bored. There was always a new book to read...a new friend to meet.

I knew I'd finish yesterday. And the last essay was lovely. Then there was an afterward. The author told me that Louise's husband died suddenly and things got hard for her until she died.

Now I knew realistically that she was dead. She was born in 1903 I think. But I wanted to close that book on her out in the middle of nowhere totally content with the life life she'd found in the backcountry of Maine.

I know, I know...I do love a good happily ever after, but life isn't like that. And yet, when I got home from camp I realized books can be just that. So I bought another Louise book, Happy the Land. And Alice Arlen, who wrote the afterward, referenced the bio she wrote about Louise, She Took to the Woods, and mentioned a lot of Louise's essays were in it...so I bought that too! I'm planning to take both books out to The Cottage and go back to my lunch dates with Louise and we're going to invite Alice to join us on occasion.

Louise talked about never being lonely, even though they lived in the middle of nowhere. I get that. I love the solitude at camp. And I learned early in life that as long as there were books to be read, I'd never be lonely.

I'm looking forward to catching up with Louise and meeting Alice at camp!

Trippin' with Holly and Susan!

This week, Susan Gable and I posted our 95th episode of Trippin' with Holly and Susan! Have you seen them? We try for a nice mix of videos about writing, books, reading, tv shows, movies, Erie PA tours...

Basically, no topic is off limits! Well, almost no topic! LOL

As we approach finishing up the first 100, we're looking at the second 100 and asking for your help. We'd love to know what you'd like us to talk about. So please send us questions or suggestions for topics. Or send us places in Erie you'd like us to visit and take you along for the ride!

I know most of you watch them on Facebook, but I have been busy parking them at YouTube. So if you've missed an episode, or (eek!) haven't seen an episode, you can always find them there! You can post any suggestions here or on Facebook, or send them to me at HollyJacobs1 (at) gmail.com.

Thank you all for trippin' with us! And for helping to fill the tank by buying our books!
